Sabina Khan Ph.D, OTD, CBIS, CNP
Owner, Child Development Specialist, Certified Brain Injury Specialist
Working in the Neuro-Nutrition field for 10+ years, Dr. Khan has studied the integral relationship between nutrition, the environment, sensory processing and brain health as it impacts human behavior and learning. It is vital for parents, teachers and health care professionals to understand how maturation of the brain influences learner readiness, sensory processing and regulation.
Following brain injury factors including physical, cognitive, psychological functions such as memory, emotional regulation, movement, and sensory processing may be greatly impacted. A pediatric brain injury specialist assesses functional abilities and create a personalized rehabilitation regimen to help your child regain or compensate for these skills.
With a research and clinical practice background in psychology, nutrition, occupational therapy & child development, Dr. Khan actively consults with schools, children centers, families and health care providers on best evidence-based practice therapeutic techniques for reorganizing the neurology underpinning various learning and behavior challenges seen in children.

Evaluation
An evaluation is essential to better understand the clinical factors affecting a child’s functional performance and to provide a baseline determination for how a child is currently doing. Based on the evaluation, a specific plan of care & recommendations can be given on how to address any underlying neurological issues with home program strategies, and in-clinic direct intervention. The evaluation can include standardized and informal testing, clinical observation, review of records, parent interview, and a teacher interview or school visits if necessary.
We understand that some children will not be able to sit for a formal evaluation and have strategies to make sure we still get the initial essential information. If needed, a determination about the optimal frequency and duration for ongoing therapy is made. Typically a child is initially seen once to twice weekly, with re-evaluations done on a quarterly basis, if not sooner.
The OT evaluation may include:
Developmental checklist
Reflex assessment
Sensory assessment
Gross & fine motor skills
Cognition
Motor planning
Visual perceptual skills
Visual motor skills
Feeding/Eating
Self care
Handwriting assessment

Individualized Treatment
Based on the findings of the evaluation, one on one treatment session may be started both to work on areas of concern, and bolster areas of strength. In individual therapy sessions we may address issues with Primitive Reflex Retainment, Self-regulation, Fine motor skills, Gross motor skills, Visual perceptual skills, Attention and Cognition, Handwriting, and Feeding. Goals and treatment approaches are changed in response to how your child is doing, as issues get resolved, and if any new concerns arise.

Consultation
There may be times when a short term consultation is the best approach. Depending on the needs of your child and family. We can offer consultations at our clinic, your home, a child’s school, either in person, via telehealth or by phone. We consult with parents, teachers and other health care providers or professionals in the child care team to answer any questions, brainstorm ideas, provide needed accommodations relevant to the environment, implement activity programs, and provide strategies to help your child’s performance in various settings.
